Burinke or Zvornikuše boats
Those were Drina’s boats. They were used for transport during Turkish and Austro-Hungarian rule and in the period between the two world wars, along Drina river to where it flows into Sava river and further to Brčko, Sremska Mitrovica and Belgrade. Loads of prunes, wool, apples, walnuts and lumber (wooden boards) were transported, so as industrial goods. They could carry up to 13 tons.
Burinka boats were bigger boats 20m long and 2.5 meters wide in the middle. In the back part, under a semicircular opening, there was an entrance to the “shack” – a corner where the crew members were sleeping, and at the front “burin” (nose) were sitting rowers (four men).
The boats sailed down Drina river fast and easily, but up the river they were pulled by three rowers; they went along the banks with loops on their shoulders and ropes, which were 200 meters long, were tied to the ship. Boats “zvornikuša” were bombed and destroyed by Germans during the occupation.
